Outside/In FREE PERFORMANCE: Quebec – Sinha Danse

Sinha Danse is a professional contemporary dance company based in Montreal and founded by Roger Sinha over 25 years ago. Creating, producing, and presenting contemporary dance are the centre of the company’s mandates, choreographing with a level of excellence inspired by the Indian cultural heritage of its founder.

Out of Bark and Bone goes back to the essential vital forces that define our humanity and give shape to who we are fundamentally, beyond divisions, affiliations, ethnic groups and cultural identities. Voice, breath and rhythm constitute the canvas of the piece. The constant fleeting interactions between humans, locked up in themselves, bouncing within the limits of their own breath, encircled by others, trying to escape, are driven by the essential need to continually outgrow and emancipate from what was there before, individually or as a group.

Roger Sinha
Choreographer & Musician

Roger was born in England to an Armenian mother and an Indian father and later moved at the age of eight to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. After graduating from Toronto Dance Theatre, he settled in Montreal and quickly became involved in several collaborations within the blossoming local artistic community. In 1991, he formed his company Sinha Danse and began developing his distinct hybrid choreographic language based on his Indian background and Canadian culture. More than 30 shows were on tour across Canada and overseas. His creations unite Bharata Natyam, a dance originating in Southern India, martial arts and contemporary dance. This unique fusion of influences has given birth to hybrid choreographies that are unquestionably distinctive.

Erin O’Loughlin
Performer

Erin O’Loughlin’s professional training includes the Alvin Ailey School in New York City and the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance. In 2010 she graduated with a BA in Dance and International Relations from the University of Calgary. In Alberta she has danced for Davida Monk, Maya Lewandowsky, and Helen Husak. In 2016 she spent several months in Mumbai, India working for Bollywood choreographer Shiamak Davar. Based in Montreal, O’Loughlin works with Sinha Danse, Andrea Peña & Artists, Sylvain Émard, and in other freelance projects. In 2018, she was selected to participate in The Creative Gesture dance residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, collaborating and performing in a new work by Alan Lucien Øyen entitled The Hamlet Complex.

Emmanuelle Martin
Performer

Emmanuelle Martin holds a bachelor’s degree in dance and has trained in France, the United States, and Canada. She specializes in contemporary and urban dance and is known for her versatility, improvisation skills, and strong presence. With over ten years of experience, Emmanuelle has collaborated with artists and companies internationally and currently works with Van Grimde Corps Secret, Trip the Light Fantastic, Bouge de là, Audrey Gaussiran, Barbara Diabo, Jobel Art, Early Morning Opera and Sinha Danse.

Emmanuelle founded Nouena Danse in 2019, and her work includes Angel, Encounter, presented at both the ZemmourBallet and Quartiers Danses festivals, the award-winning Chimion, and Anges Lumières.

Marie-Michelle Darveau
Performer

Performer, teacher, choreographer and cultural worker, Marie-Michelle Darveau has been actively working in the dance milieu since 2014. She works for various choreographers and companies in the contemporary dance milieu, among others. Her interest in diversifying her stage experiences also leads her to perform in corporate parties, events, festivals and galas. Marie-Michelle teaches and choreographs in several schools and dance programs in Quebec and Ontario. Since 2018, she has added another dimension to her work as a choreographer and performer by working and exploring the medium of video-dance. Her involvement in her community and her desire to make dance shine in her native region led her to work as a dance development officer for the Théâtre Hector-Charland in L’Assomption. Her work is nourished by new encounters, ongoing training and the constant search for new physical and creative challenges. Marie-Michelle is also a Tune Up Yoga instructor and an ambassador for Fillactive.

Marie-Ève Lafontaine
Performer

Marie-Ève Lafontaine studied at L’École de danse contemporaine à Montréal. In 2004, La Cité de l’Énergie de Shawinigan hired for the first time Marie-Ève to be a part of the project Kosmogonia as a dancer, acrobat and rehearsal director. Since then, she has choreographed for many productions such as Eclyps, Amos D’Aragon, La première aventure, and Dragao. She also danced for Cirque du Soleil, Cirque Eloize, Créations Estelle Clareton, Dynamo Theatre, Omaterra, Daniel Léveillé Danse, Danse Lhasa Danse on tour, Van Grimde Corps Secrets and
Sinha Danse. In parallel, Marie-Ève teaches contemporary dance workshops.

Nils Levazeux
Performer

Nils Levazeux began learning jazz dancing in his neighborhood school. Later, he started practicing ballet and entered the Nantes Conservatory (France) where he studied for three years. At the school, Nils discovered for the first time contemporary dance, as well as the improvisation through a somatic approach. The notions of deep listening, time and space exploration, natural flow and non intentional movement, etc., still play a big role in his establishing as an artist. The young dancer later joined the École de danse contemporaine in Montreal where another three-year long journey of encounters, questioning and learning began. Nils Levazeux graduated in 2022 and he has worked since then with different Montreal based companies among which is also Sinha Danse.

David Campbell
Performer

David Campbell is a professional dancer based in Montreal. He has worked with many choreographers, including Ginette Laurin (O Vertigo), Hélène Blackburn (Cas Public),Roger Sinha (Sinha Danse), Hélène Langevin (Bouge de là), Claude Caron (Ballet Ouest de Montréal) and Marie-Claude Poulin (Kondition Pluriel). David also enjoys sharing his love of dance by teaching classes and workshops for students of all ages. David completed professional training programs at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School and l’École de danse contemporaine de Montréal.

Francis Pomerleau
Drummer / Percussionist / Composer

He is a self-taught drummer, and a percussionist accompanist in contemporary dance since 2006 who has played for:
Springboard Danse Montréal; École de Danse Contemporaine de Montréal; École supérieure de ballet du Québec; Ballet Divertimento; Département de Danse de l’UQAM; Département de Danse de l’Université Concordia; Département de Danse du Cégep de Saint-Laurent; Regroupement Québécois de la Danse (RQD); TransFormation Danse (Danse à la Carte); Studio 303; O Vertigo; Ballets Jazz de Montréal; Toronto Dance Theater; Martha Graham Dance Company (Danse\Danse). With musician colleague Philippe Fourneau, he cofounded Projet FPPF Project (https://www.facebook.com/fppf.projet.9) which is dedicated to music composition for the contemporary dance, the circus and the visual arts.

About Outside/In

The Outside/In Canadian Performance Series is a special presentation occurring between January and March 2023 and will feature national performing artists from across Canada. The series is made possible with a grant from the Department of Canadian Heritage (Celebration and Commemoration Program). As part of the series, we will be offering six live theatre performances, an outdoor street social event featuring local music and cultural groups, and a promotional campaign to encourage attendees to support local businesses and restaurants. These activities will increase opportunities for Canadians to participate in various commemorative activities and celebrations to mark Canada’s emergence from the COVID-19 pandemic. The project will support the revival of local economies through in-person events. All events, including the professional theatre performances, will have free access for the community.
