K Stobbe and P Williamson: Echoes Reimagined

Presented by the Vancouver Chamber Music Society in collaboration with Anvil Theatre

Monday, March, 1, 2027 | 1:00 p.m.

Great music rarely stands still. Across centuries, composers have continually looked to the past for inspiration, reshaping familiar voices into something entirely new. In Echoes Reimagined, violinist Karl Stobbe and pianist Paul Williamson explore this enduring dialogue between tradition and reinvention.

The program opens with Biber Suite, a contemporary reimagining of the music of Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber by Canadian composer Michael Oesterle. Stravinsky’s Suite Italienne, drawn from his celebrated ballet Pulcinella, similarly transforms eighteenth-century melodies into a work of wit, elegance, and unmistakably modern character. The journey concludes with Beethoven’s Sonata No. 7 in C minor, Op. 30 No. 2, a dramatic and deeply expressive masterpiece that stands at the threshold between Classical restraint and Romantic intensity.

Praised for his rich tone and long, poignant phrasing, Karl Stobbe is one of Canada’s most distinguished violinists, with performances spanning Carnegie Hall to collaborations with many of today’s leading artists. Joining him is pianist Paul Williamson, one of Canada’s most exciting emerging musicians and recipient of the 2025 Sylva Gelber Music Foundation Award, whose artistry has earned recognition through numerous national and international prizes.

A program of reflection, transformation, and rediscovery, Echoes Reimagined invites listeners to hear familiar echoes through new ears and to experience the enduring conversation between past and present.

Program:
• Oesterle/Biber – Biber Suite
• Stravinsky – Suite Italienne
• Beethoven – Sonata No. 7 in C minor, Opus 3
