Academy Chamber Players: Between Shadow and Light

Few programs capture the full spectrum of human emotion as vividly as this journey between shadow and light. Through the contrasting voices of Dmitri Shostakovich and Antonín Dvořák, the Academy Chamber Players explore a landscape of introspection, longing, tenderness, and joy.
At the heart of the program lies Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet in G minor, Op. 57, one of the composer’s most celebrated chamber works. The solemn Prelude, searching Fugue, and biting Scherzo reveal a composer of extraordinary emotional depth, balancing introspection with moments of fierce intensity.
In contrast, the music of Dvořák offers warmth, lyricism, and renewal. The charming fifth Bagatelle radiates with the spirit of Bohemian folk music, while the Piano Quintet No. 2 in A major, one of the composer’s most beloved chamber masterpieces, overflows with soaring melodies, rhythmic vitality, and irresistible joy.
Comprised of exceptional faculty from the Vancouver Academy of Music, the Academy Chamber Players bring together some of the city’s finest performers in a flexible ensemble that honours both artistry and education. A program of striking contrasts and profound humanity, this journey moves from contemplation and shadow toward warmth and light.
