Despres, Davis, Raymond & Chan: Shades of C Minor

Some music speaks in shades of joy; this program speaks in shades of C minor. Bringing together four of Canada’s most compelling chamber musicians, this powerful collaboration explores the emotional richness and dramatic intensity of one of music’s most expressive tonal landscapes.
The afternoon opens with Beethoven’s String Trio in C minor, Op. 9 No. 3, a work of remarkable ambition and youthful fire. Rich in tension and dramatic contrast, the trio foreshadows the bold and deeply personal voice that would come to define the composer’s mature style.
The program culminates in Fauré’s Piano Quartet No. 1 in C minor, one of the great masterpieces of the chamber repertoire. By turns lyrical, turbulent, and radiant, the work unfolds with sweeping melodies, rhythmic vitality, and an unforgettable finale of exhilarating energy.
Featuring violinist Gabrielle Després, recent finalist at the 2025 Sibelius International Violin Competition, violist and composer-performer Ryan Davis, acclaimed cellist Noémie Raymond, and pianist Amanda Chan, this extraordinary ensemble brings together artists of exceptional individuality and depth. A fitting conclusion to the season, Shades of C Minor is a celebration of passion, intensity, and the enduring power of chamber music to move and transform.
