Final Light
Presented by the Vancouver Chamber Music Society in collaboration with Anvil Theatre
Returning to the VCMS stage after a riveting 2023/2024 debut, Nexus Chamber Music brings the timeless voice of Franz Schubert to life with one of the greatest chamber works ever composed: the Piano Trio No. 2 in E-flat major, D.929. Written in the final year of his life, this expansive, transcendent piece is at once deeply lyrical, structurally masterful, and emotionally staggering.
Known for his long melodic arcs and subtle transformations, Schubert builds a universe of meaning within each phrase. From the elegiac slow movement to the finale’s triumphant return of a haunting march theme, the trio overflows with invention, tenderness, and dazzling unity.
This performance features a remarkable ensemble of rising stars: Evren Ozel, newly awarded Bronze Medalist at the 2025 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition; Alexander Hersh, top prize winner at the Naumburg International Cello Competition; and violinist Stephanie Zyzak, praised for her searching artistry and expressive depth. Together, they offer a compelling interpretation of Schubert’s masterpiece—profound, intimate, and unforgettable.
